LPG & Industrial Gas Cylinder Tracking System
GS1 & EPCIS 2.0 Native

A cylinder tracking system gives each LPG, industrial, specialty or medical gas cylinder a unique, machine-readable identity — usually an on-metal UHF RFID tag, a laser-etched serial and a QR code — and then records every event in that cylinder's life: filling, quality checks, dispatch, delivery, customer custody, return, inspection, statutory retest and finally condemnation. Instead of a register that says how many cylinders should exist, the operator gets a live, auditable record of where each individual cylinder is, who holds it, whether it is legally fit to fill, and what it is earning.

Problems We Solve

What large-scale cylinder operations actually struggle with — across bottling plants, dealer networks, industrial gas depots and hospital supply chains.

Cylinder float untraceable across plant, dealer and customer
Manual registers, gate passes and spreadsheet stock counts
Statutory retest dates missed — PESO non-compliance risk
Shrinkage, theft and cylinders that never come back
Illegal refilling, decanting and domestic-to-commercial diversion
Rental and demurrage never billed on idle cylinders
No batch traceability when an incident or leak is reported
Delivery disputes — "cylinder never arrived", "it was underweight"
Idle cylinders parked at customer yards for months
ERP stock and physical yard count never reconcile
Fragmented data across multiple plants, depots and dealers
Recall and root-cause investigation takes weeks of paperwork

SeekSoft CTMS Modules

How It Works

Six stages that repeat for the life of every cylinder — each one a scan, not a register entry.

01

Tag and enrol

Each cylinder is tagged, weighed, photographed and enrolled with its make, capacity, tare weight, valve and last test date. Existing fleets are converted in planned batches.

02

Screen and fill

At the plant the cylinder is screened against its retest date and condition before the carousel engages, and the check-scale weight is written against the serial.

03

Load and gate out

Load and gate out

04

Deliver and confirm

The delivery team scans on handover; the customer confirms by OTP; the empty is scanned back in the same transaction. Custody transfers with evidence attached.

05

Return and inspect

Empties are read back at the plant, inspected for dents and corrosion, and either returned to the fill pool, routed to hot repair or segregated for statutory testing.

06

Reconcile and act

Overnight reconciliation compares physical reads with ERP stock and dealer statements, and the exception list reaches the people who can close each line the next morning.

Choosing the Identification Technology

There is no single right answer. The correct choice depends on read volume, environment and how the fleet is handled — most operators end up running two layers.

TechnologyRead RangeLine of SightBulk ReadSurvives Blasting & RepaintRelative CostBest Suited To
Printed barcode labelContact to 0.3 mRequiredNoNoLowestLow-volume depots, short-life pilots
Laser-etched serial + QRContact to 0.5 mRequiredNoYesLowPermanent fallback ID; customer and field self-scan
NFC tagUp to ~50 mmNear contactNoYesMediumHospital wards, customer audits, smartphone-only teams
LF RFID (125 kHz)50–150 mmNot neededNoYesMediumLegacy installed base; tolerant of metal and moisture
UHF RFID, on-metal (860–960 MHz)2–5 m typicalNot neededYes — full pallet or truckYesHigherBottling plants, bay portals, gates, high-throughput fleets

In practice, high-throughput LPG and industrial gas operations run on-metal UHF for hands-free plant and gate reads, with a laser-etched serial and QR as the permanent fallback that any phone can read. SeekSoft CTMS treats all of these as read paths into the same cylinder record, so a fleet can migrate technology without losing history.

Business Impact

What changes for the plant head, the compliance officer, the distribution head and the CFO. Ranges below reflect outcomes typically seen in comparable cylinder-tracking deployments; actual results depend on fleet size, baseline discipline and rollout scope.

60–80%

Lower untraced losses

Cylinders that previously disappeared into "shrinkage" become a named holder, a last-seen location and a recovery action.

100%

Retest compliance

No cylinder past its statutory test date can be filled, because the fill line is interlocked with the due-date engine.

2–4

Extra rotations per cylinder, per year

Idle cylinders are identified and recovered instead of resting at customer premises, which directly raises fleet productivity.

Days → minutes

Faster recall and investigation

A suspect batch is traced forward to every cylinder that shared it, and backward to the shift, scale and operator that filled it.

~90%

Less reconciliation effort

Month-end stock reconciliation becomes a review of a short, aged variance list rather than a week of counting and calling.

Dispute-proof

Billing and deposits

Rental, demurrage and deposit positions are backed by serial-level evidence, which shortens collection cycles and settles disputes on the first call.

Who Runs Cylinder Tracking

The economics work differently in each segment, but the failure mode is the same — assets that leave the gate and stop being visible.

LPG bottling plants

Oil marketing company plants and private bottlers running carousels, check-scales and high-volume despatch with statutory obligations on every fill.

LPG distributors & dealers

Distribution networks holding large cylinder floats against security deposits, with daily doorstep delivery and empty collection to account for.

Industrial gas companies

Oxygen, nitrogen, argon, acetylene and mixture fleets rented to customers, where rental leakage and idle assets are the main financial exposure.

Hospitals & medical gas suppliers

Medical oxygen and nitrous oxide fleets needing ward-level custody, manifold bank visibility and audit-ready batch traceability.

Manufacturing & EPC sites

Large plants and project sites consuming cylinders across contractors, where site-level custody decides who pays for a cylinder that never comes back.

Exporters & multi-country fleets

Operators moving cylinders across borders who need ownership, test class and country-specific marking recorded against each asset.

Deployment Coverage Across India

AOPL implements and supports cylinder tracking from Bengaluru, with field teams operating across twelve-plus cities — commissioning portals, running tagging drives and supporting plants on site.

Bengaluru & Karnataka

Head office, engineering and the integration lab where plant configurations are staged before shipment.

Mumbai & Pune

Bottling plants, industrial gas depots and large manufacturing clusters in the western corridor.

Delhi NCR

Distribution networks, hospital gas supply and multi-plant operators across the northern belt.

Chennai & Coimbatore

Industrial gas fleets serving automotive, fabrication and textile manufacturing.

Hyderabad

Pharma and specialty gas customers with purity-grade and certificate traceability needs.

Kolkata & the East

Steel, foundry and shipyard cylinder fleets with heavy handling environments.

Ahmedabad & Gujarat

Chemical and petrochemical belts with dense LPG and industrial gas movement.

Guwahati & the North-East

Distribution in weak-network regions, where offline-first edge deployment matters most.
